The most-Googled recipes of 2023 - The Washington Post

'Tis the season for looking back at the year that was, and one of the best ways to do that is to remember what we were eating in 2023 — or at least what we considered eating.

The Google search rankings, for which the Internet-search giant compiles lists of the most-looked-for terms, from movies to memes, serve as sort of annual cultural pulse-taker. They are also a time capsule, which feels necessary these days, when even events that took place just weeks ago seem to slip so quickly into the mists of memory. Sometimes, our interest in food reflects major moments in the news (remember Scandoval? That new king over in the U.K.?). Sometimes, they constituted moments of their own, when a collective interest or mood made a dish go viral.

If we are what we eat — and we are what we search — here’s who we were in 2023, as told through the most-Google-searched recipes of the year in the United States.

10. Cottage cheese ice cream

Health-minded, protein lovers on TikTok have rediscovered cottage cheese, the unsexy staple of sad 1970s diets. One popular way they used the suddenly trendy dairy product in 2023 was in ice creams, blending the curds with sweet mix-ins (think fruits, cookies, jams and syrups). We tried it two ways — strawberry cheesecake, and cookies and cream — and found that there’s actually something to the hype.
